Did He Jump or Was He Pushed? Abductive Practical Reasoning

چکیده
In this paper we present an approach to abductive reasoning in law by examining it in the context of an argumentation scheme for practical reasoning. We present a particular scheme, based on an established scheme for practical reasoning, that can be used to reason abductively about how an agent might have acted to reach a particular scenario, and the motivations for doing so. Plausibility here depends on a satisfactory explanation of why this particular agent followed these motivations in the particular situation. The scheme is given a formal grounding in terms of Actionbased Alternating Transition Systems and we illustrate the approach with a running legal example.

Abduction for (Non-Omniscient) Agents
Among the non-monotonic reasoning processes, abduction is one of the most important. Usually described as the process of looking for explanations, it has been recognized as one of the most commonly used in our daily activities. Still, the traditional definitions of an abductive problem and an abductive solution mention only theories and formulas, leaving agency out of the picture. Our work prop...

متن کاملA Dynamic-Epistemic Approach to Abductive Reasoning
We discuss what an abstract abductive problem means in terms of an agent, her information and the way the latter changes due to informational actions. Then, by using examples of abductive situations, we argue that different assumptions about the agent’s reasoning abilities and her information give rise to different kinds of abductive problems, and therefore different kinds of solutions. Finally...
متن کاملAn Approach to Fractions Via Measurement
No matter how many diagrams they see of pizzas divided into slices, students have persistent difficulties with understanding fractions. What does a fraction mean? Where do the rules for fraction arithmetic come from? What does multiplication, or division, of fractions represent? What is the role of “proportional reasoning” in all this? What is the significance of the rational number system whic...

1. MOTIVATION In “The Sign of Four", Sherlock Holmes makes some very startling inferences about Watson’s whereabouts by informing Watson that he was at the Wigmore Street Post Office earlier that morning. On further inquiry by Watson, Holmes explains that he combined (joined) the observation that “Watson’s shoes had a reddish mud on their instep", with the fact that “just opposite the Wigmore P...
